WHAT WE HAVE LEARNT FROM THE BEACH NOURISHMENT PROJECT IN QINHUANGDAO

    • In recent years, a number of beach nourishment projects have been implemented in Qinhuangdao, to deal with the problems of coastal erosion and beach degradation. From practice we have learnt the way of thinking and methodology to concur the problems in front of us. The management projects of the Western Beach, Jinmeng Bay Beach, Laohushi Beach and Eastern Beach described in this article are typical cases. For the Western Beach, we adopted the option of "dune-beach-sand bar-submerged breakwater" beach nourishment. For the Jinmeng Bay Beach, priority is given to sand nourishment on berm. The Laohushi Beach needs protection instead of sand nourishment, and the Eastern Beach is the case which needs daily maintenance. This paper summarized the experiences and lessons we have learnt from the planning and design, implementation to monitoring of the project, and discussed the beach life, applicability of sand bar related engineering risks and other issues.
