A REVIEW OF DEVELOPMENT IN DEEP-SEA LONG CORING SYSTEM

    • The deep-sea sediment core, as a kind of important record of the changes in deep-sea environment, is a basic requirement for marine science especially for deep-sea research. How to recover longer, uninterrupted and high resolution sediment cores remains the key to deep-ocean science. It is also a main challenge for China to face with in the international competition. In this study, we reviewed the recent progress of deep-sea long coring system in the world, analyzed the technical problems related to the system, such as disturbance, compression and breaking. Possible solutions are discussed. In the new design, we combine the advantages of the gravity sampler and piston corer. It is suggested that the gravity sampler be used for the upper part of 10 m in depth and piston corer for the coring below the depth.
