SEAFLOOR CLASSIFICATION IN HYDROTHERMAL FIELD USING MULTI-BEAM SONAR

    • Multi-beam sonar is an efficient mean for seabed classification. It can provide information on sediment types and their distribution pattern. We studied the seabed classification for a hydrothermal field using Simrad EM120 multi-beam sonar data. The sonar backscatter image shows that soft sediments are mainly distributed in the southwest, and the mixture of rock and gravels to the east of the vent.
