Geoengineering suitability evaluation on coastal zone construction in Shajing Island in the Pinglu Canal mouth

    • With the advancement of the Western Land-Sea New Corridor strategy, Shajing Island in the Pinglu Canal mouth, serves as a crucial node. The evaluation on the geoengineering suitability in the coastal zone is of great significance for regional development and ecological protection. Based on various data from geological exploration, remote sensing images, and hydrological survey, in combination of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and GIS spatial analysis technology, we constructed a suitability evaluation system that covers six major criterion layers in topography, hydrology, geoengineering, hydrogeology, adverse geological processes and geological disasters, and ecological environment, in which 14 indicators are involved. Results show that the coastal zone of Shajing Island can be divided into moderately suitable areas, less suitable areas, and unsuitable areas. The unsuitable areas are mainly affected by soft soil distribution, including sections under heavy impact of floods, waves, tides, storm surges, and ecologically and sensitive sections under water/soil corrosivity and coastal erosion. Therefore, we proposed a “zonal control + engineering optimization”strategy, providing a scientific basis for coastal zone engineering construction and ecological protection.
