ON CRETACEOUS FRACTURES IN SURESTE BASIN, MEXICO:A CASE STUDY ON STRUCTURE W IN BLOCK M

    • The Structure W is an important structure in the Sureste Basin of Mexico for oil and gas exploration, where hydrocarbon accumulated in the Cretaceous carbonate of the block M depends on reservoir fractures. After studies of the cores and FMI logging data in similar cases, we calculated the density and strike of fractures. The result shows that effective fracture is most developed in the Middle Cretaceous along a NS-WE strike. Regional stress and lithology are the major control factors on the development of fractures and the strikes of effective fractures. A model for fracture development caused by the salt-related compressive anticline is proposed. Finally, using the Stratal slice technology and curvature attribute, it is predicted that the Cretaceous is the fracture-developed strata in the Structure W. The result is supported by statistical results from surrounding structures.
