Abstract: As one of the most prosperous economic regions in the world, the coastal zone is characterized by the active interaction of ocean and continent and the strong impact of human activities. The ecological environment of the zone is vulnerable. The Liaohe Delta, being well known for its rich land resources, is important in a strategic point of view. However, there remain many geo-environmental issues to be solved. Geological survey started early in 1860s in the Liaohe Delta. Most of the follow up researches, mainly small scale regional geological surveys were related to mineral resources. It is obviously not sufficient to meet the current social demand. We need more systematic and comprehensive data for environmental studies so as to meet the needs of the society and the public. In order to protect the ecological environment for construction of a prosperous coastal economic zone, we proposed a new round coastal survey orientated to geoenvironment at the Liaohe Delta after analyzing the current environmental issues.
